Spring is Here!

Winter has come and gone.  Whether you live in an area with distinct seasons, or you live in the tropics with a more subtle shift in the elements, another season has passed.  As nature emerges from its winter hibernation, spring is a time of new beginnings, new plants pushing up and out of the ground.  So naturally the directional energy of this season is upward and outward; expansive.  It is a time to awaken, start afresh and take on more activity.  The element of Wood correlates to springtime.  This element is represented by the Liver and Gallbladder.  To support the upward, expansive nature of this season it is best to eat supportive foods.  Heavy, salty foods have a sinking quality to them so its best to limit them during springtime.  Classically, lighter meals incorporating sweet and pungent flavored foods.  Please note that sweet does not encourage the consumption of sugary rich food.  Many grains and legumes have a sweet flavor to them.  Sweet in moderation will soothe the liver and restore harmony in the digestive system.  Pungent cooking herbs such as basil, fennel, rosemary and dill are great additions to any meal.  Spring time is often a popular time to cleanse, supporting the detoxification functions of the liver and gallbladder.  During this time, the liver is also susceptible to disharmony.  Symptoms of liver disharmony can include anger, frustration, nervousness and possibly muscle rigidity to name a few.  Diet and lifestyle choices that support the Liver and Gallbladder  can help alleviate and correct disharmony.  Classically in Chinese Medicine, Spring is a time to let your hair down.  So I invite you to let your hair down, embrace the season and support your liver and gallbladder through this season.
